Riding the StartupBus to SXSW

This year, I’m heading to SXSW for the first time. What will be unusual about this trip is the way I’ll be getting there. Instead of flying or driving, I’ll be riding in a WIFI coach bus with other techies and geeks from the Bay Area and tasked with creating a startup during the bus ride.
The StartupBus started as a joke about being able to form a startup on the drive from San Francisco to Austin. Now in the second year, the number of departing cities has increased from one to six, from other tech centers in the US like New York, Cleveland, Miami, and Chicago.
I’ve told some of my friends about the StartupBus and reactions ranged from “that sounds pretty cool” to “you’ve got to be crazy.” I think it’s a bit of both. 48 hours is not a long time at all. Things have to be prioritized, decisions made, arguments had. And you can’t really go anywhere. I think it’s the type of situation that can accelerate friendship. Or hate. I’m banking on the former. Upon arriving on the 10th, they’ll be a bunch of folks just like me with a common experience that hopefully I’ll get a chance to hang out with before and during the StartupBus launch party at SXSW.
It might make for a cool documentary and finally give “America” a idea what those guys and gals who “work with computers” do.
It isn't cheap to get all of us to SXSW. In addition to the participant fees, the StartupBus needs sponsors. You can get perks like your name on the side of a bus, invites to launch parties and sneak peeks, or a night cap or dinner with the team of your choice during SXSW. You can donate here.
